7 Easy Ways To Bring Hygge Into Your Home This Christmas Season

What is hygge?

Hard to explain and even harder to pronounce, the Danish word "hygge" (pronounced "hoo-gah") has gained so much popularity around the world in the last few years. It translates roughly to "cosiness," but it means so much more than that.

What does hygge mean?

In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with favourite people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Cosying up with a loved one for a movie – that’s hygge, too. As it is just sipping a hot cuppa and reading a good book. And there's nothing more hygge than sitting around with friends and family, enjoying the small things in life while making memories. This might actually explain why the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world.

The high season of hygge

The high season of hygge is Christmas. Danish winters are known to be long and dark, and so the Danes fight the darkness with their best weapon: hygge, and the millions of candles that go with it.

1. Create a cosy atmosphere.

Coziness is key when it comes to a hygge home. The safest way to achieve this is by adding fluffy pillows and soft blankets to snuggle up on the couch with. You can also do this by creating cozy nooks like a window bench or a love-seat. These make for a great place to unwind with a good book and cup of hot cacao.

2. Bring the candles out.

Dim the main lights down and add more fairy lights, twinkle light candles and Christmas lights. This is also the perfect time to go all out with heavenly smelling candles. Our favourites are anything from Lavender, to Winter spice to Citrus. Just be careful to choose clean ones that DO NOT contain any toxic chemicals or synthetic parfums.

3. Declutter.

Clear out all the stuff you no longer need. Donate to your favourite charity, put on sale or throw away. Having less stuff around you is the quickest way to make space for some more feeling of peace and cosiness. Also we all know there’s nothing better than coming home to a clean and tidy house. All you have to do is get your comfies on, grab your favourite cup of tea and cozy up on the sofa next to your loved ones, wrap up with your favorite winter blanket and turn a Christmas movie on.

4. Bring more natural materials.

Hygge teaches that being surrounded by natural materials is good for us on a deeper level as well. Something we, Western countries,  should take a leaf out of our Scandinavian neighbors' book.

5. Be present.

One of the key teachings of hygge is to slow down and be more mindful of the present moment. Simply be here and now. Be present and thankful for all the small joys in our lives.

6. Surround yourself with the people of your heart.

Invite family and friends with whom you always have a great time and laugh from the heart over to share some happy times together.

7. Treat yourself and your loved ones to something meaningful.
